Police Track Down $100,000 Worth of Wheelchair Rugby Equipment
4/16/2008

Last Thursday, 43-year-old Ken Hicks parked his cargo van in front of a friend's house in Edmonton, Canada. But when he returned the next morning, the van was nowhere to be seen.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the thieves had also made off with an attached trailer – containing more than $100,000 worth of wheelchairs and specialized equipment that belonged to Hicks' wheelchair rugby team.  Hicks and his teammates, who are all quadriplegics, had been looking forward to playing in a national competition next month, but the trailer full of equipment had not been insured, and there was no way they could replace the gear in time. It looked like the game was off for good.

But when local Edmonton police officers heard about the crime, they made a commitment to locate the missing truck and trailer – and on Sunday, they discovered it, abandoned a mere four blocks from where Hicks had originally parked it. The wheelchairs and other equipment were still inside, untouched, so the players will be able to compete in the nationals next month after all.

"We deal with so much crime and tragedy every day," Sergeant Erik Johnston told The Edmonton Journal. "It is just nice to be able to legitimately help somebody out."
