Chinese Grannies Are Hip-Hop Dance Stars

Wu Ying may be 71 years old – but she's got more in common with Destiny's Child than Driving Miss Daisy. While most people her age content themselves with knitting sweaters and playing Yahtzee, this music-loving grandmother from Beijing, China, spends her days in bandannas and baggy pants, grooving to her favorite hip-hop beats.

With a troupe of fellow senior citizens, Wu Ying is a proud member of the Hip-Hop Grannies, a dance group that travels around China, performing for young and old alike. It may seem strange to think of grannies doing any sort of rocking that doesn't involve a chair, but these ladies can get down with the best of them – check out their somersaults and other skillful stunts in this video clip.

Hip-hop dancing is also a fun, social way for these older ladies to stay fit and healthy well into their golden years: "I did hip-hop for two years and didn't need any more medication, never went to the hospital and now I don't even know where hospitals are," the 66-year-old dance group leader, Chen Guobi, told Reuters.

So if a senior citizen you know wants a break from the Bingo crowd, it might be time to buy her a Wu Tang Clan CD instead – as long as you can deal with the noise.
