New "Smart Bra" Can Save Lives
10/17/2007

These days, the world is abuzz with news of a brand-new bra – but you won't find this exclusive undergarment on any Victoria's Secret rack yet. English researchers are still putting the finishing touches on the so-called "smart bra," which could be commercially available in about two years.

So what's so special about this exclusive bra? Is it diamond-studded? Does it double its wearer's cup size?

No – but it does something much more impressive: It can save lives.

Using advanced heat-detection technology, the new smart bra can detect signs of breast cancer at the earliest stages. A microwave antenna woven into the bra's fabric is able to pick up on abnormal temperature changes that could indicate the presence of a small tumor in the breast tissue. When the bra senses a possible problem, a visual or audio alarm will go off, alerting the bra's wearer to visit her doctor as soon as possible.

The smart bra could be an essential purchase for women with a family history of breast cancer, who can now learn about possible problems in their own bodies far earlier than they might otherwise find out. The bra is also ideal for women undergoing breast cancer treatment, as it can immediately detect the presence of new cancerous cells. Though the smart bra isn't a replacement for routine mammograms, it's the perfect way for women to stay aware of any potential problems before they become catastrophic.
