When you travel abroad, ever notice how much healthier, skinnier, and all-around better looking the locals are, compared to us slovenly Americans? It's all about the food.
CNN.com discovered five healthy eating habits that help foreigners keep fit – and might just help you, too.
1. In China and Greece, locals fill up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, usually steering clear of meat. Stock your plate up on healthy produce and grains, leaving just a little extra room for meat or fish.
2. People in Italy, France and many other countries spend hours at the dinner table. Follow their lead – savor your food instead of wolfing it down.
3. In France, the average portion size is 25 percent smaller than in America. When you go to a restaurant, pack a quarter of the meal in a doggie bag as soon as the food arrives.
4. Italy, France, Japan, and even the US are known for lots of fresh food options at the grocery stores – next time you're hungry, snack on some baby carrots instead of a bag of chips.
5. In India, China, Thailand, and again, even the US, it's easy to find a wide range of herbs and spices, many of which are known for their remarkable health benefits. Stock up on cinnamon, garlic, and cumin, and you'll find yourself feeling better with every meal.
