Suresh Joachim, a Sri Lanka native now living in Toronto, holds more than his fair share of world records: longest karaoke marathon (25 hours, 40 minutes), longest time standing on one foot (76 hours, 40 minutes), and longest time ironing (55 hours, five minutes) are just a small sampling of the 53 Guinness World Records he's broken.
But despite all of his accolades, there's just one record that still eludes him: the record for breaking the most Guinness World Records.
He may hold second place for now, but Joachim, a stay-at-home-dad, has been intent on breaking as many records as possible since 1991, when an uncle gave him a Guinness Book as a gift. Even his wedding was a record-setting event: Joachim and his (very patient) wife Christa had 79 bridesmaids and 47 groomsmen at their ceremony, setting records for the highest number of each. "It definitely wasn't my idea,"
Christa told CTV.ca.Besides looking after his sons, Joachim usually attempts to set one new record each month. Up next, he's planning a trip to India to create his very own Bollywood musical, which he hopes will break records for shortest filming time, most costume changes by one character, and most roles played by one actor (himself, naturally).
All this record-setting business isn't just for fun, though: Joachim uses many of the events as fundraisers for important causes. A recent "star jump" record-breaking event raised $20,000 for a medical aid organization called Project Hope, and he hopes to raise more money to help eliminate world poverty.
"This is the good time to turn my way to spread the peace message and bringing more money to the children," he said. "I am ready to help any of them."
